Election Commission to start vote count on Saturday

NEW DELHI: After conducting the month-long Lok Sabha elections for 543 seats, the Indian Election Commission (EC) is geared up to open up the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) on Saturday to count the votes simultaneously in 4,260 halls at 1,080 counting centres.

Anyone interested in authentic trends and results can log on to a special website http://eciresults.nic.in which will provide the progress of counting after the completion of each round at each centre. The website is directly linked to counting centres through a special software.

The EC is also erecting large display boards outside its office to show trends and results to the public. It has also requested the Press Information Bureau to make similar display arrangements at the state headquarters. The commission has detailed approximately 60,000 counting staff, with a micro observer at every table, for completing the task in the presence of the authorised counting agents of the candidates to witness the process of counting.

The micro-observer will conduct random checks of EVMs by recounting votes from two counted machines after every round while the entire proceedings in the counting hall shall also be videographed, sources at the EC said. The tabulated data will be verified by the observers and the result sheet from each counting hall – after the end of every round – shall be sent to data and media centers simultaneously. The data centre will then upload the result sheet data on the EC’s server using the software specially developed for the purpose. iftikhar gilani
